5 Signs Your Electrical Panel Needs an Upgrade

Your electrical panel may need an upgrade if breakers trip again and again, there are no open spaces for new breakers, lights dim when a big appliance starts, the panel feels warm or buzzes, or you are about to add something big like an EV charger, an induction range or a heat pump. Here is what each of those signs means, and what an upgrade involves in San Diego.

What does the electrical panel actually do?

The main service panel usually sits next to your meter. Power from the utility comes in there and is split into circuits, each protected by a breaker. Every outlet, light and appliance in the house is fed from that panel.

Every panel has a limit: how much power it is rated to carry and how many breakers it can hold. When the house asks for more than that, the signs below start to show up.

Sign 1: Do your breakers trip again and again?

A breaker that trips once in a while is doing its job. A breaker that trips every time the microwave and the toaster run together, or every afternoon when the A/C kicks on, is telling you the circuit is carrying more than it should.

Sometimes the fix is a new dedicated circuit, not a whole new panel. Sometimes the panel itself is out of capacity. An electrician can tell which one it is.

Sign 2: Are there no open spaces left for new breakers?

Open the panel door (just the door, never the cover) and look at the rows of breakers. If every space is full, there is nowhere to add the circuit a new appliance, a remodel or an EV charger needs.

Sign 3: Do your lights dim when a big appliance starts?

Lights that dip when the A/C, a dryer or a microwave starts can point to a circuit or service that is working near its limit. It can also be a loose connection, which is worth having checked on its own.

Sign 4: Does the panel feel warm, buzz or smell like something burning?

Treat this one as urgent. Heat, buzzing, crackling, scorch marks or a burning smell at the panel are not normal. Do not open the panel cover or try to fix it yourself. Call a licensed electrician right away, and if you smell burning or see smoke, call 911.

Sign 5: Are you adding something big?

An EV charger, an induction range, a heat pump, a hot tub, an ADU or a kitchen remodel can each add a large new load, and that often means the old panel is out of room. It is one of the most common reasons a panel upgrade comes up.

What does a panel upgrade involve?

A panel upgrade replaces the main service panel with one sized for what the house needs now. In San Diego it also means working with the City and SDG&E. Licata Electric handles that back-and-forth as part of the job.

Larger jobs start with an on-site walk-through and a formal written estimate, so you know the plan before work begins.

Quick checklist

  • Breakers trip again and again
  • No open spaces left in the panel
  • Lights dim when big appliances start
  • Warm, buzzing or burning-smell panel (urgent)
  • Planning an EV charger, induction range, heat pump or remodel

Questions

Can I add an EV charger without a panel upgrade?

Sometimes. It depends on how much capacity your current service has and how much the house already uses. An electrician checks that before the job starts, not on install day.

Is a tripping breaker dangerous?

A breaker trips to protect the wiring. One that trips often is a warning sign worth having checked. Never tape, hold or force a breaker on.

Do you handle the City and SDG&E side?

Yes. A panel upgrade means working with the City and SDG&E, and Licata Electric handles that as part of the job.
